What is the independent cinema? According to the media, it is the cinema done out of Hollywood great corporations. According to this definition, the whole spanish cinema is independent. But, if Amenábar, Trueba and Almodóvar are independent filmmakers, then a movie as "FAQ" would hardly be included in the same package. So it is independent of spanish cinema too. Is it underground? It seems no, because there isn't underground in Spain yet. Maybe underground doesn't exist in whole Europe. Is it an alternative movie? Perhaps, but alternative to what, to all?... Is it cinema? Narratively it is like a film, but it was shooted in video. Is it amateur? Maybe it is in spirit, but it was done by professionals. So, what is "FAQ" and the rest of very-low-budget video feature-lenght movies done without industry assistance?... It would be necessary to find a new name to something that, perhaps, it is a new media too. And, if it really is a new media, why still nobody has said it?

¿Qué es el cine independiente? Según los medios, el cine que se hace al margen de las grandes corporaciones de Hollywood. Según esta definición, todo el cine español es independiente. Pero si Amenábar, Trueba y Almodóvar son independientes, una película como "FAQ" difícilmente podrá ser incluida en el mismo paquete. Así que también es independiente respecto al cine español. ¿Es underground?... Parece ser que no, porque en España ya no existe el underground. Quizá no exista en toda Europa. ¿Es una película alternativa? Quizá, pero ¿alternativa a qué, a todo?... ¿Es cine? Sí narrativamente, pero está rodada en vídeo. ¿Es amateur? Quizá en espíritu, pero ha sido hecha por profesionales. Así que ¿qué son "FAQ" y otros largometrajes de muy bajo presupuesto, rodados en vídeo, que se están haciendo al margen de la industria?... Habrá que pensar un nombre nuevo para algo que, quizá, también es un medio nuevo. Y si realmente se trata de un medio nuevo, ¿por qué nadie lo ha dicho aún?
